ASSOCIATED GROCERS AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO TWO STUDENTS

Associated Grocers, Inc. is pleased to announce the awarding of two scholarships to college-bound students. The following students have been awarded the Associated Grocers - Sam S. Politz Scholarship, beginning with the 2011 Fall Semester:

  • Samantha D. Faulkner of Prairieville, Louisiana

Samantha is the daughter of Benjamin and Laura Faulkner. She attended Dutchtown High School in Geismar, Louisiana where she held the honor of class valedictorian. During her high school years, Samantha participated and excelled in 22 Advanced Placement and Honors courses. She also demonstrated her leadership ability by serving as President of the Interact Club, member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and a mentor for ninth graders. Samantha’s scholastic and honorary awards include: AP Scholar; Semper Fi Award; Swimming Academic All-State; and lettering in cross country; swimming; and track. Her community service included: Cub Scout Day Camp; Gonzales Swim Team; Interact Club food drives and church volunteer work. Samantha plans to attend LSU and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

  • Jonathan C. Ortega of Hessmer, Louisiana

Jonathan "Chance” is the son of James Ortego and Susan Pickett. He attended Holy Savior Menard Central High School in Alexandria, Louisiana. Chance was at the top of his class academically with an ACT score of 34. He was President of Key Club and a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Beta Club, Chess Club and Varsity Tennis. Achievements and honors include: All A’s Award; Louisiana Student Achievement Award; Algebra II Honors Award; French III Award; Religion III Award; English III Honors Award; and Saint Michael’s College Book Award. Chance also participated in many Literary Rallys, Quiz Bowls and Science Fairs. He serves his community by volunteering at his church and as a counselor at Buddy Camp for the disabled. Chance will be attending Tulane University and plans to major in Mathematics.

Through the generosity of the members of Associated Grocers, and all donors to the Associated Grocers – Sam S. Politz Scholarship Fund (both administered by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation) these scholarships have been made available.
